🌸 1. Three kinds of yarn I mostly used
If you’ve been following me on Instagram or Pinterest, you probably know that most of my crochet flowers are made with milk cotton yarn. Sometimes, I also use mohair or hollow yarn for certain designs to create different textures and effects—just like the examples in the photos.Each type of yarn gives a different look and feel to the finished flower, and the hook size I use also changes depending on the yarn. Here are the yarns I use the most:
✨ Milk Cotton Yarn (4-ply and 5-ply)
This is my favorite and most commonly used yarn. Why do I love it so much?
✔ Wide color range — there are nearly 80 beautiful shades to choose from.
✔ Composition: 60% cotton and 40% acrylic — the perfect blend for softness and durability.
✔ Smooth texture — it’s easy to crochet with, doesn’t split easily, and rarely gets fuzzy.I’ve seen some crocheters on Instagram torch their finished flowers lightly to remove fuzz and make the surface smoother. But with milk cotton, you can totally skip that step—your flowers will come out smooth and clean right after finishing!

Another yarn I love using for crochet flowers is mohair.
✨ Why mohair?
The biggest advantage of mohair is its vibrant and rich colors. Many mohair yarns come in beautiful gradient shades, which naturally create stunning color transitions in your flowers without changing yarns.However, mohair is thinner and has a fuzzy texture, which makes it harder to see your stitches clearly while crocheting. So yes—it’s definitely more challenging to work with compared to milk cotton.Because of the difficulty and the unique effect, crochet flowers made with mohair usually take more time and skill to complete, and the final price is also higher than flowers made with milk cotton.But trust me—it’s worth it. I especially love using mohair flowers in bridal bouquets. The result is always absolutely breathtaking—light, airy, and full of dreamy color layers.
Now let’s talk about hollow yarn—a material that’s quite different from milk cotton and mohair.
✨ What makes hollow yarn special?
Hollow yarn is slightly stiffer and has a natural sheen, which instantly gives the flowers a high-end, luxurious look. It’s commonly used for crocheting bags and hats, but when used for flowers, the result is stunning—structured, glossy, and full of texture.Unlike mohair, hollow yarn colors are usually deeper and more muted, not as bright or vibrant. That’s why I often use it to create men’s bouquets or vintage-style arrangements. It has a sense of elegance and calm, perfect for gifting to someone important—like a teacher, family member, or client. It shows care and thoughtfulness, without feeling too flashy or cheap.Hollow yarn flowers are also great for framed art pieces or home decor since they hold their shape well and can be preserved permanently.💪 One thing to keep in mind:Because of its stiffness, hollow yarn is a bit tougher on the hands while crocheting. I recommend taking breaks and protecting your hands when working with it. But that’s also why flowers made with hollow yarn are usually more expensive than those made with milk cotton or mohair—the material and the craftsmanship both add value.

🌸 2. Crochet Hooks
Choosing the correct hook size makes crocheting easier.
✨ The finer the yarn and crochet hook, the more realistic the flowers will look.That’s a whole different level of crochet art—micro crochet. It requires a lot of skill, patience, and great eyesight. The results are incredibly detailed and lifelike, but it’s definitely not beginner-friendly. If you’re just starting out, I recommend beginning with simple patterns and thicker yarns to build your foundation first.As for me, I usually work with crochet hooks between 1.5mm and 2.5mm, which correspond to US Steel Hook Size 1 to 8. These sizes work perfectly for most of the flowers I create.There are so many crochet hook brands out there, and honestly, the best hook is the one you feel most comfortable with. If possible, try a few different handles and materials until you find your favorite—your hands will thank you later!

Flower Stem Wire Introduction:
The flower stem is a flexible plastic-coated iron wire, available in diameters of 2mm to 3mm and lengths of 30cm to 40cm.
2mm stems are used for small and lightweight flowers, such as lily of the valley, tulips, and other delicate blooms.
3mm stems are ideal for larger flowers with heavier heads, such as Thai roses and sunflowers.

Wire adds structure to your flowers, allowing you to bend petals and leaves naturally.
✅ Recommended: 20-24 gauge floral wire. 0.3mm -0.6mm
0.3mm-0.4mm: for small flowers, such as baby's breath
0.5mm-0.6mm: for petals and leaves, such as roses, tulip.
>0.6mm:big leaves and petals , such as sunflowers, twigs.

✅ hot gule gun:
The flowers can be assembled by sewing or gluing. We usually use hot glue, which is heated in a glue gun. Simply plug in the glue gun, wait for it to heat up, and then apply the glue.
⚠️ Please be careful when using the hot glue gun, as the melted glue can cause burns.
✅ Artificial Flower Stamens:
Artificial stamens are used to create the centers of flowers such as plum blossoms, peach blossoms, crabapple flowers, cherry blossoms, and more. They help add realism and detail to your handmade flowers.
✅ Small sharp scissors
✅ Yarn needle or tapestry needle for weaving in ends
✅ Stitch markers to keep track of rounds
